Many Thanks MadMan

My heavy hand  , its 2nd hand around 2 1/2 years old , removed as occupants moved house and wanted a brand new system and said i could have the old system if i wanted it.

Without going into the physics of LEDs, the forward voltage is determined by the colour of the LED used - red is about 1.8V ~ 2.5V (usually about 1.8V). So, if the LED is red just replace it with the same and you should be OK. The only thing that could be different is whether it is low current or not. If you can trace the tracks on the PCB to the current limiting resistor you could calculate whether it is normal or low current - 10mA or 2mA.
