Roof chippings - how deep and where from?

I need to put some chippings down on the garage extension roof, it’s aprx 2.5m x 2.5m. How deep should I lay it and what sort of chippings/gravel should I use? Existing stuff is white but not a lot comes up to buy that matches this.
