we have a property abroad with a large tiled roof terrace with 5 inch high tiles stood upright around the edges that is leaking, we are going to try and cure this ourselves, would replacing the grout be a good place to start as everything appears to be poor quality materials

Without ripping the lot up and waterproofing properly; all you can really do is re-grout or silicone around the edges. An epoxy grout is more impervious to water but expensive and more difficult to apply.
