room sizes and maximum spans etc..

The only way to learn is to challenge yourself, choose something more complicated than a house, tis the only way to self learn. You have the internet at your fingertips, you can download or view details for virtually any building component imaginable, the tricky bit and challenge for you is stitching it all together.

AutoCAD Architectural 2009 can show the drawing in a sketchy way, so it is less sterile
 
I use CADStd. some freeware, realy basic program...

I'm an electrician by trade, not a designer..
like i said, i do it for fun now and again..

or more precisely, I do it so i can get to sleep at night.. :oops:
sometimes I'll see a house on TV or driving down the street, and start designing one similar in my head.. then It swirls round in there and I can't stop it untill I get it out and onto paper or disk..
