Last year we had our heating system totally upgraded with a new combi system inc all new rads. We also had a new roomstat but stayed with the 'mechanical' dial type unit.

We found this ok but it has quite a wide temp variation between on/off. I've heard the digital ones will maintain a much more even temperature --- within half a degree.

Can I connect a digital one to the same cable as the present one and if so is it a straight forward job?

Having done a search it seems it may not be that straightford.

Thanks for any advice.

Yes you can. There will probably be three wires in the existing thermostat.

Live supply
Switched live
Neutral

The old dial thermostats often had an accelerator (small heating device) as an attempt to improve accuracy. This device needed the neutral supply. Digital thermostats don't normally have a need for this so loose the neutral and get their operating power from batteries.

Make sure you identify the wires before you remove them from the old thermostat, there is usually a wiring diagram inside somewhere, or the terminals will be marked.

The new thermostat will come with instructions, but if you have any problems just post a question on here.

Loose the neutral, means tape it up OR remove it, (Well i think it dose)
