Round Spots On Wall

Morning all,

I recently moved into a new flat and today I noticed some round spots on my bedroom wall, which I believe was recently painted - some of them are slightly raised (see attached picture). Any idea what they are?

Hi Ken, thanks for replying to the thread. On the other side of the wall is the bathroom, more specifically the tiled wall where the shower head is fixed on. I should also mention that I was told that there was a leak from the bathroom of the flat above which is directly above my bathroom. However I am not sure if the leak affected the bedroom wall at all. If it did it, it might have been the upper corner, not the area where the spots are, which is mid height. The leak was fixed just before I moved in. Hope this helps.

As it seems it goes right up to the ceiling, if you are in a flat and the upstairs bathroom is directly above, more likely coming from theirs.

Take some more photos please in both rooms, showing the top of the wall and the ceiling.

How old is the building?

Do you have a powerful and effective extractor fan?

OK.

Main suspect will be the mastic seal between the bath and the wall tiles at the top end of the bath.

Next possible suspect are missing / loose tile grout, even one area of missing grout can cause this issue.

If there is a shower screen ? that can assist ina leak of shower water getting through the wall.

Least likely. a leak in the pipework feeding the shower, that [generally] has a very large effect and loads of dampness and mould / staining Etc.

Have a close look at the above areas, IT MAY??? indicate the culprit.

Thank you John! I’ll take some more pictures in the morning. I might be wrong, but I think the building was built around 1900.

As for the extractor fan, it’s a standard model (I’ll send pictures tomorrow), and it’s right next to the shower head.

Please find attached some more pictures - I hope they can help shed some light.

@Ken - it seems to me that the shower is tiled well. I only noticed two areas where water might go in, but they are much lower than the spots and I don’t think much water can infiltrate there. I might be wrong.

looking at the bedroom pics, I think it's coming from above

tape a piece of clear plastic tightly to the top of the wall. this will prevent evaporation so any water will become more obvious.

Perhaps the wall had tiny spots of something a bit oily/non-absorbent, like hair spray, which weren't cleaned off before emulsion paint was applied on top?
