Hi I am wanting a router to do some small amounts of work on projects about the house and don't really know what to buy. I have a table saw which has a space to fix a router and it came with the fence and to make a small router table on the saw top. I think I would want to make use of this initailly and perhaps make a small table from an unused cooker unit I had from when I installed our kitchen. We were going down the built in cooker route but instead got a freestanding cooker so the cooker carcase was left over so I could make some sort of router table from this?? Any way what sort of router should I buy? I have seen Bosch and Ryobi 1400watt routers in the 100-140 euro range at my local diy store does this seem what I would need as a home DIY'er? Any recommendations welcome but I really don't want to spend too much.

you probably have the ryobi table saw then :D

in general you need a 1/4 inch for handheld and 1/2 inch for under table mounting as any off the specialist cutters need a table and half inch router

remember you need to do several passes on heavy routing and only half the shank size as depth off cut 3.2mm on 1/4 and 6.35 on 1/2"

what are you thinking off making ??
remember the router is the smallest cost as the cutters are quite expensive so worth buying a 1/4" and a 1/2" router eventually

Thanks Big-all
I actually have another saw table I think its called a Fieder if I have spelled the name correctly. I did not know that there were spewcific types of router to attach to a table saw, though they just were srewed on using the four screw holes, learned something there! I am goping to be doing quite a few jobs which will require profiles putting on to finish nothing fancy prob just rounding over and I will be renovating a staircase which I think will require some router work. There will enevitably be some other stuff that I will do making shelf units and the like. I thought if I bought a general purpose sort of router with an interchangable collet I would be OK? I think I will defo make the cooker carcase into a router table, I should be able to fit a top and so on. I would the be able to house the router in there and work from that. I know that there some very expensive routers out there and will not be spending more than €150 on the router. I have a load of bits that I have been given, they are not very expensive makes but prob OK for and occassional user?

don't think there is a specific router i don't know lol
the point i was making is most useful cutters for fancy uses need a 1/2" router and a table
yes you can mount a 1/4" under a table to allow quicker working off many lengths the same with a basic moldings

and whilst you can use a 1/2" for free hand work its not recommended for the unpractised
