Hi
can I route socket and lighting cable through the space in my ceiling without going through the beams. The space has been created by lowering the ceiling under new steelwork. The gap is about 50mm. I do understand about the regulations and I do have to have the work checked. Any advice on routing new cable would be appreciated.

Simple answer yes. But how hot will ceiling be and will the cable be RCD protected? You may want to consider using Ali-tube cable which will take more heat and does not need RCD protection!
Also if you want someone to sign any forms to say they have designed the work then of course you need to involve them at design stage.
