Problem is on a data collection module on a production line talking to a PC via RS232 comms link. Direct connection with only 5 to 5, 2 to 3 and 3 to 2

The 0v of the data collection module is moving relative to the 0v of the PC and the comms ports have been damaged. Suspect track damage on the 0v tracks and/or the devices.

An off the shelf opto isolator barrier is needed. 5 or 24 volt supply available from the data collection module and a supply can be obtained from the PC.

Mains supply is not available at the production line where the isolator would be most effectively located.

I am trying to avoid building one from scratch.

This any good?

only thing is the price, might be a case of building one from scratch at that price?

the external supply volts are 8-18v but i'm sure you can get around that
this might help:

http://www.linear.com/pc/downloadDocument.do?navId=H0,C1,C1003,C1042,C1031,C1060,P1272,D1661

application table shows for 4-5.5v input what components to use to get 12 v out

or drop down from 24v -18v supply via resistor? if you find out the current draw of the opto device

Tim

I have ordered one of the Scimar units. Saved a couple of hours work over the weekend.

Thanks for the information.
