hi hoping someone can help or give some advice.

We are wanting to knock through to a downstairs extension. We are making an opening of 2.5 meters, in a brick and breeze block outside supporting wall. the wall width including brick, breeze block and cavity is 250mm. What size rsj is required.
Many thanks

Give a local structural engineer a ring.

You are likely to need something like a pair of 178mm x 102mm x 19kg beams bolted together at 600c/c with m12 bolts and steel tube spacers.

However you will still need the calc's from an S.E. to give to building control.

Many thanks for your reply, we did wonder if using 152x18x16kg would be ok as the 152 measurement fits in between two layers of brick, where as the 178 will require some kind of packing.
Will the SE give us a minimum and a maximum rsj to use ???
Thanks

I thnk you mean a 152mm x 89mm yes?

This may be the case. However, don't be surprised if you lose a few bricks on the outer course and the inner block leaf will almost certainly require some messy chopping. So don't get exited about it fitting in between courses!

The S.E will be specific and explicit and will specify either a pair of beams or a single beam and is unlikely to give you any other choices.
