I want to prep my floorboards for painting but I do not want to sand the old paint off which is probably lead paint. Does anyone have any advice for such a scenario? I was considering layering a few layers of undercoat and then light sand. Would this work do you think?

The requirements to sand is to provide a key for the paint, so what you are asking is counter productive.

Really you need to close the door, mask the gaps, open a window and wear a mask and have the hoover attachment on the sander. When finished damp down the air with water using a spray bottle.
