I have a Samsung Galaxy bought a few years ago and I haven't downloaded any of the updates since buying. Do I need to do this and can anyone explain to me (in simple terms if possible please) how I can download these updates without losing my credit as a PAYG? A relative tried this but wiped out my credit of almost £15.00. I have now added £10 but am worried in case that should disappear also. Secondly, I am not sure if this second problem is because of not downloading up to date software, but if I am sent a text message it is duplicated to me and I get either get the second, same text, immediately or the second one comes through a few hours later. I am with Tesco Mobile. Any help would be most appreciated.

Had to do the updates on Friday 4 different versions one after the other. Took over 2 hrs. Each download was over 2gb.
Done it on my home wifi not cost anything. Suggest you log into family or friends, or pub etc, wifi.
@tlan.

You don't have to do the updates. I've had a Galaxy phone which I never updated. It's your decision but I'd say no biggie if you don't.

Yes, connect the phone to WiFi (if you have it at home), and you can do the update over WiFi (you could turn off mobile data beforehand to make sure it's done on WiFi).

The text duplication is a bit baffling. The only thing I can think of is maybe you have a dual SIM phone and it's somehow setup as both physical SIM and eSIM, but I doubt it's this. It sounds as though it could be SIM related and it might be worth asking Tesco Mobile. They use someone else's network, so it could be coming through on both Tesco and that network.

Thank you both for your replies. Yes I have a home computer but no other SIM phone. I did ask at Tesco's about the doubling up and they suggested it was the signal and the signal in this area is a bit iffy at times, but when it is on it keeps going off and on which is driving me mad. The problem with the signal for the computer internet on/off started when they were doing something with the new lines going in but I have had them check the line and they say there is nothing wrong. I am not too sure how to turn off mobile data but will have a look and see if it is obvious. Does switching off the mobile data preserve the credits I have? I thought maybe the doubling up was caused by lack of updates.

Yes it could be caused by poor mobile signal, as if your phone doesn't confirm SMS receipt back to the network, the SMS will get sent again.

So, is your home broadband working correctly, and do you have WiFi for it?

What phone model do you have?

To use mobile internet, you can either use mobile data via the 4G network, i.e. Tesco Mobile in your case, or you can use WiFi (by connecting your phone to your home WiFi). Your phone credit will only be used by if you are using mobile data.

To switch off mobile data:

Settings (look for cog wheel) / Mobile Networks / Toggle to Switch Mobile Data On or Off

If you have a poor WiFi signal, it may have loaded by data. I know there’s an option on my iPhone to use data if no WiFi signal. I have that set on mine to 'no'.

Why wouldn't you update your phone, many of the updates close security loopholes making sure your phone is secure (as it can be), bizarre!

Then again why would anyone buy a Samsung phone.

Turn off downloading using date and only upgrade when you have a good wifi, do it near the router if yours is bad.

Can you not connect the phone, to your home wifi broadband, or a free public broadband, whilst it downloads the updates?

Thank you all for your replies. I found the mobile data switch - thank you accelerator - and it was switched on which is probably why I lost my credits before. I think the suggestion of using another wi fi as my signal - with EE - it is very on/off, is a good idea so I will do that when I go in land a bit. I am not sure of the model of the mobile. When I spoke with EE re the doubling up they suggested it could be a faulty router so I have now received a new one and will try that. Keeping my fingers crossed.
