It largely depends on what the hardcore is for. If you are laying a damp proof membrane on top to then pour a slab, a nominal 50mm sand blind on top of the compacted hardcore is usually required - this is to ensure no sharp stones in the hardcore punctures the membrane. What is the hardcore being laid for?
