sanding floorboards

i am going to sand my floorboards in the bedroom
do i need to fill the gaps between the boards or not
what with if so
best varnish or stain etc

What is on the floor boards? paint, varnish etc
How big are the gaps?
Make sure you punch all nails 3-4 mm before sanding
