Sandstone Cottage Chimney Flashing

My 1900 cottage as cement flashing around 3 stacks, it is badly broken up and leaking a lot. The roof is welsh slate. I plan to remove all the broken cement, is it better to redo the cement or using some kind of lead flashing? I guess I would have to cut a slot into the stone for this?
