If I apply an sbr slurry ( 1 part sbr - 1 part water - 5 parts cement ) to an external wall and want to embed fiberglass mesh into the render would I apply it straight onto the wet slurry and then immediately apply the sand cement scratch coat???

Are you covering over a crack? If so then there is no need to use sbr slurry. Get some expanding metal and fix it over the crack with hilti nails or board nails. Make sure the mesh is 12inches wider all around the crack, When it is fixed throw your scratch over it...

I'm using the sbr slurry to bond to the existing walls but thought that it might help to use the fiberglass mesh to stop cracks appearing as the house is next to a main road and this has caused it to crack before

In that case put your mesh into the scratch coat and bed it in that.
