Started making a rattling noise when towel rail heats up, anybody any idea what could be causing it.
Its only about 6 months old and I have removed it to see if there are any blindingly obvious problems, but really dont know what Im looking for.
Cant call plumber back as I connected pipes he had fitted to towel rail, reason, delay in other trades.

I once went to a boiler doing that.

It turned out to be a loose screw that had got into the main heat exchanger and would move about under the flow of water but only when it was all hot.

It sounded like someone tapping it with a screwdriver.

It was loud enough to be heard from 3m away!

trv by any chance :?:

TRVs are not often fitted to towel rads but if this one has one then it could well be that.

Perhaps not really so much as any problem with the TRV but indicating the lack of an suto system bypass.

It might stop the noise if the lockshield is closed and then opened by just 1/2 turn.

If this were the cause and you have TRVs everywhere then slightly altering the TRV setting would stop/start the noise. As would opening another TRV elsewhere.

Excuse my ignorance ,but what is one of these?

try turning the valve round or fitting it on the other pipe
I know it was some time since you posted this Kev , but I only just got round to doing it and you were right.
Many thanks

Sorry, a typing mistake!

It should have been an "auto" bypass valve !

All currently sold TRVs should be bi-directional and indicated on the side by a right angle with arrows on each end.

Of course it might be a single direction valve or old stock etc.

Whilst they are marked as bi-directional I always think they are still better fitted on the flow.

If you have TRVs on ALL the rads then you should have an auto by-pass valve fitted.
