Has anyone approached car dealers under the scrappage scheme yet?

I have a 10 year old car and currently researching dealer publications to check what they are curently offering. There is a worry however, that those dealers which sign up to the scheme will not offer the discounts which were already available.

The industry is said to be at a crossroads with potential closures and redundancies if they can't achieve turnover. So why don't they just sell cars 'at cost', plan for zero growth for the next 12/18 months whilst this recession runs its course? This would encourage sales and maintain jobs.........or am I just being naive and simplistic?

I think the dealers were already offerring great discounts. The scrappage allowance plus their existing discounts would mean selling their cars at a loss.

You’ve already sussed it's a total con & a waste of time, there will be no extra discount to be had; no prizes for guessing the first question the dealer will ask you  You will do just as well if not better negotiating your own discount!

It’s a bit like the current MP expenses fiasco, it’s utterly contemptuous that they think we are really that stupid

If you have a 10 year old car thats reliable, then you can probably run it quite cheaply. A major service on it probably involves changing the oil and filter and emptying the ashtray every 2 years.

So, you scrap your old car, and the £2000 you get towards the shiney new one sounds fantastic. But...consider the other expenses you will now have to pay for;

1) Depreciation. Your new car could lose 40% of its value in the first year, on a Focus that's £4000

2) Fully comp insurance. The TPFT on your old car won't do any more, so allow an extra £400 for fully comp.

3) Servicing. To comply with the warranty, and to stop the car depreiating still further (no stamps in the book = lower re-sale value), you will need a main dealer service every year (this is how dealers make their money). A friend had his 2 year old Saab serviced at the dealer's recently - cost him £700

So, the first couple of years ownership could see off approximately £7000 on a smallish car, taking the above 3 expenses into account.

Think I'll stick with my old jalopy!!! ;)

I`m looking to take advantage of the scrappage scheme and replace my 12 year old run around for a new car(hopefully golf gti mk6),i`ve been to vw ,ford and vauxhall to enquire about the scheme, basically if you use it you can forget about any other discounts.

iirc because of block excemption you do not need to have a car serviced by a main dealer to ensure the warrenty is complete,a lot of the smaller garages are a dam sight cheaper them main dealers as long as original parts are used and they stamp the book then your ok.

rightly or wrongly a car with main dealer history will always be worth more than a car with full stamps at an independant come resale time.

you might get away with it if its a well known specialist.

So we have the first move from the government, offering a payment for voluntarily scrapping a car.

Now how long will it be before the scrapping of all cars over 10 years old becomes COMPULSORY?

difficult to justify that with the current fervour for all things green.

even if you forget about that what would be the real benefits of such a move? tax i suppose. the propping up of a greedy but dying manufacturing industry maybe.

the livelyhoods of many thousands of people who deal with older cars would be gone overnight.

i would have to leave the country.

Chris Evans will not be impressed with that scheme.

He paid £5.6million for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder recently...............
