sealant around gas hob in wooden worktop

Hi,
when this was fitted they used a kind of sticky putty type stuff and it looks really manky already and is coming off. Any reason why they didn't use clear silicone like they did around the sink?
What should we seal this with?

Silicon would be perfectly ok.
