Sealing decrative brickwork

I've just had an inglenook built out of reclaimed bricks and having now cleaned the finished bricks with brick acid I was wondering if someone could advise the best method od sealing them. someone in the past said to use thined down varnish (1:1 varnish and thiners), but is this right?
