I have a whole house to fit with solid oak, 18mm x 125mm, varying lengths. I'm planning to secret nail it to existing floorboards which are in quite good condition.

The skirting boards are big and impressive, and I thought it best to undercut them, rather than take them off.

The ground floor has a basement under half of it, the other half has mud about 20cm below.

Will there be issues with damp on the ground floor?

Also, should I use any sort of underlay?

Thanks

You'll have pine floorboards, and an oak top layer, and they may expand at different rates, so an underlay may be useful in stopping andy possible creaking noises.

The airbricks under the floorboards should be taking away any excess moisture, but there are underlays that have a combined dpm in them if you want to play safe.

You'll need to take off the final skirting board, as you can't undercut all of them, and you'll need to nail the last board from the top so that the skirting board then covers the nails. And it goes without say that you need to leave a 10mm expansion gap, filled with cork strips.

Thanks Doggit.

So you can use underlay without floating? You just nail through the underlay?
