My washing machine was slow to fill and needed a new valve, the engineer said the old one was clogged with sediment and if not resolved the replacement valve will eventually clog again, despite a filter on the fill hose.

What is strange is the cold tap water feeds off the same pipe and is not gritty at all, nor is there any issue with the dishwasher all of which are close to the stopcock, the washing machine goes in one direction, the dishwasher the other.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be and how/if it can be resolved? Never had this problem before. I have a water softener and a water tank in loft if that’s of any relevance.

Might the inside of the flexible pipe, feeding the WM be breaking up?
