seeking advice on 2nd hand boilers...

simple in the eyes of the masters we have to work under if your not registered you are not deemed to be a class of person who is competent regardless of anything else read the i &u regs not our rules
rarther what we have inflicted upon us to be able to work

you are making the assumption that he can check the boiler is still safe to use

btw mate cutie watch it bonny lad :lol:

PaulAH, installing the boiler isn't the problem. It's setting it up if you haven't got equipment, and complying with the fat controllers rules if you haven't got the right piece of paper. YOU can have the right piece of paper from.....................

The building control officer :D

Well thanks for trying but I’m still waiting for an answer. The scenario was (in another post): A guy who’s done some reasonably difficult DIY in the past, including building his own computer, takes delivery of a boiler PCB on Christmas Eve, too late for the engineer to come and fit it for the big day. He asks: Is this a job I could do?

He suggestion met with the usual hysteria “Not if you value your loved ones” etc etc.

Let's assume the new PCB is an exact likeness of the old one, has no user-adjustable parts and non-reversible connectors. Matey draws the layout of the old PCB, carefully wires up the new one, secures it, switches on and checks the boiler is working OK.

My question was: What would the average expert do differently? I was not asking if this against the law or how many certificates you need to stir your tea with a neon screwdiver but what else would a “competent person” have done? Only asking.

paul you have been answered but you did not like the reply CHARGE ACCORDINGLY after checking certain things and carrying out standard tests for the safe operation of the appliance :D

PaulAH,

How do you check the boilers working OK, have you got the relevant Test equipment?
As most of these guys that work on boilers have test gear that is treated like goldust,(If they bought it themselves) has to be calibrated every year at a recognised test establishment.
Have to follow a set of guidelines, laid down by some little pr*t in whitehall, who has probably never seen the inside of a boiler and can only write in doubledutch, just to make sure if he missed something it will be difficult to find.
Need I go on.
Is there any wonder you get silly remarks. :D

"work" in relation to a gas fitting includes any of the following activities carried out by any person, whether an employee or not, that is to say -

(a) installing or re-connecting the fitting;

(b) maintaining, servicing, permanently adjusting, disconnecting, repairing, altering or renewing the fitting or purging it of air or gas;

(c) where the fitting is not readily movable, changing its position; and

think b says it all

au contraire , oilman.... you can get i..n..ter..mi.ttent faults with capacitors. motor will run...when youre there, then when you go , it locks out overnight.
:roll: just wanted to clear that up. :evil:

Agreed Wilhelm, but if the capacitor has been causing intermittent problems it will probably be indicated by a low capacitance value, (easily measured). It may be indicated by a low motor speed too. :wink: Just wanted to clear that up :)

Sorry to appear pedantic (or vindictive!) but, for the third time of asking, what would the "average expert" do differently from the competent DIYer in this case?

do not answer the question

CHARGE ACCORDINGLY

from bripl may be getting closer.

Haven't heard from Oilman yet.

Use the appropriate test equipment.

And don't mean your diddly manometer from Q&B :D
