Separate Hob and Main oven

1. Do I need a separate circuit from the MDB for these and what would be the best rating for RCD? The oven is a Mwave + double and the other a ceramic hob with 4 rings.

2. If I can have them on the same circuit how does one branch to the next unit in the run.

3. Can I do this all myself and have an electrician give it a certificate (assume I need something)?

4. Do I put the cable in a surface duct or leave it in free air pinned to whatever (part of it runs in the loft)?

Yes, we need rating of the oven and the hob.

1. You'd need a 30mA RCD unless strict criteria can be met.

2. Depends on the ratings of the connected appliances.

3. You'll be lucky to find and electrician to put his name to your work, I wouldn't.

4. Have you got insulation in your loft, running cable in insulation significantly reduces its current carrying capacity.

Hmm, just talked to my mate (we are going to fit the kitchen together) and decided to save costs but make it "legal".

1. I assume we need to fit a new ring main (MIT132) to supply the kitchen separate from the rest of the flat power circuit. This will mean fitting a new MCD/RCD 32A in the main box and splitting the existing power circuit. Is this notifiable?

2. I will get the ratings for the cooker/hob tommorow but the actual job is to shorten the existing cable, fit a new cooker switch and extend this to the hob with surface cable perhaps on top of the new wall units (in a duct). Is this notifiable?

3. For 2. does the MCB (MIT132) in the main unit need replacing with an RCB? This will supply a circuit with the cooker and hob combined on a single cable.

4. Extend existing lighting circuit to kitchen cabinets. Is this notifiable?

Installing fixed wiring systems to BS7671 does not automatically make them legal, notification of works via a building notice to your LABC AND complying with BS7671 does.

All work in domestic kitchens is notifiable, adding new circuits and changing protective devices is also nofifiable under Part P of the building regulations.

In your situation you'll save yourself a lot of time and effort by getting an electrician in, who will know exactly how to approach wiring your kitchen and will take care of notification on your behalf.

Have now discussed this with the LA and an electrician. He is going to fit a new MB. Prior to that we are going to move a cooker wire, fit a new cooker point and connect the cooker and hob into that.
