I ordered burger and chips, for delivery, a few weeks ago and paid via card. The bill, presented at the end of the ordering process, was the cost of the burger, the delivery, then a service charge on top. Is a service charge normal for such things, and what actual service, on top of the basics of supplying a burger, and delivering it?

I always tip. My food is always piping hot too. I guess it's up to you how you value the service or lack of.

I always go and collect, I don't trust the delivery chaps, I bet they have a few chips

What ever makes you think that.....?

It doesn't really explain what it's for, it only explains the amount can vary.
AI gives a bit more

Delivery companies add service charges to cover platform operational costs, app development, customer support, and to subsidize the convenience they provide, separate from the driver's delivery fee, helping them maintain profitability in a competitive market by funding app features, restaurant selection, and 24/7 support, even for subscription users.
