You need to find a free website name known as a Domain name (not all ways as easy as you think!) then register it. When you register it you might as well by the web space as well. This is just space on a server.

The easiest web page creator is probably Frontpage but it's not good really. The best is probably dreamweaver but it takes some getting used to, it depends how much time you have.

The best way if you are going to have a lot of pages or want to keep adding new pages is to get a content management system (CMS) set up, like Drupal or Joomla. These have editors built it and you can add modules to the site and change the theme or look of the site fairly easy. You'll need to get to know a few things like FTP and creating graphics as well.

    Have fun it's all do'able!

Everything online (if not password protected) will be at one point indexed by Google spiders and the like. How high you end up on the search results is a completely other matter.
don't ever buy in to companies that promise you a spot on the first page on search engines, that's utterly rubbish! (A: they can't predict Google and B: they can't predict what search terms your website visitors are going to use)

You'll need to get your webpage and images on the hosting server, they will send you the log on URL and password you then download it to the server using FTP.

As WoodYouLike said, getting a good google rank is not easy, things to bear in mind are website name this is a big part of rating, have your keywords in the name separated with - i.e. red-bus.com if you sell red busses! Also your page title should have your key words in. Then you need to get sites to link to you to get a page-rank. This is just part of it. You'll struggle with a 1 page website IMO.

High ranking and a high place on the search engine is just part of the 'fun'. Getting people to click on your high listed ranking and visit your site is another big one!
Quick results can be made with Google Ad-words - but again it's all in the writing of headlines.

I've not long done my website (though I've still loads to do on it). I used a mixture of FrontPage and pure HTML. I actually find FrontPage easier to edit on than using Notepad. It was also easier to position photographs using FrontPage - though I did ditch all the FrontPage code that was generated - that can cause problems.

I am using free hosting at the moment from Bravenet - yes, it's got an advert banner across the top but apart from that, it's OK and the bandwidth is all right as is the disk space. It just means that my website has a .bravehost.com at the end of it. My forum is on free hosting too and is linked to the website.

Best thing I ever did was to go to the library and get "The Complete Idiots Guide to FrontPage" to start myself off, then with some hints and tips from a webdeveloper forum and searching the net for dropdown menus and suchlike, I think it's turned out not too bad (though I'm not brave enough to post the address cos I don't want told it's crap!!!)

Next thing I did was do a search on "free search engine submission" which includes google as well as some obscure search engines and submitted the url on them.

I think how far up the ranking on searches depends on how many hits you get on your website.

Best investments you can do on websites and ranking are:
    A) create a dynamic website (aka blog) - I've created various for other small businesses that are like normal 'static websites - with typepad (aff)
Blog = Better Listings On Google ;)
    B) buy the Ultimate WebMarketing Strategy (aff) by Ed Rivis - best book around at the moment.

The only thing with free hosting is you cant normally have your own databases and you dont get MySQL. If you want to run your own forum, Blog or CMS you can get hosting very cheap these days, then you get more control of your site, to set a forum up on takes less than an hour, then you can customise it to suit you website style.

If you want to get a bit more in depth you may need to get to know CSS and some XHTML, this way you can customise you whole site easily and keep it within the web standards, this will also help you google ranking.

It's good fun getting to know it and seeing the end results.

    only just seen this

if you want a "professional" looking website then having it hosted for free is NOT the way to go.

look at theis site, its diynot.com, suppose it was diynot/afreehost.com

not quite the same is it. then there are similar issuses with your email address

Taking this forum again the email is admin@diynot.com

you know who it is because it says @diynot.com

but if you have a free host / email you get somthing like

    admin-diynot@somefreehost.com

not the same, the worst has to be some one with AOL.com , and i have seen several on my travels on the backs / sides of vans

    14.99 month thats extotrtionate

I can recomed some one if you like

you go to the home page, type in your domain name (the one you want) it then checks to see if its available.

if its not tough. (you may have to opt for a differnt one or change the .com to .uk (you get the idea)

if it is available select the purchase button, you must also by some sapce on the server, cheapest is ultra basic

then you pay for it, and if you are really lucky it will be available for all to see by tomorrow (that is after you have uploaded it)

    i suggest me2uweb

very reliable and friendly and cheap, (no hidden extras)

p.s. if you have made a webpage in FrontPage you can upload it. they do not make websites for you, but you can change it as and when you like
