Hi, I live in a 120 year old terraced house in London that's been turned into two flats. I was replacing the old white plastic light switches with metal ones when I discovered something strange. There is a shared hall (although officially I own it) with a light - there's two switches - one at either end of the hall. I'm presuming there may be another switch inside the downstairs neighbours house? Anyway, when I tried to change this switch, I was confused as there were 4 wires going into the back of the switch, rather than 3 wires. Then, to my surprise, when I rewired the wire, the light came on even though I had my light circuit switched off. I believe the circuit seems to be linked to the downstairs neighbours circuit. Is this possible?

Yes.

It sounds like the switch that you have removed is an intermediate switch.

I hope this diagram helps, but it has a habit of doing more harm than good.

Perfectly possible. Has it been converted into an upstairs and a downstairs flat?

Is the lamp upstairs or down? Where are the switches that you know about? A switch with 4 terminals is used when there are (at least) two other switches.

Where is your flat?
