Shelf Supports in 18mm Plywood

We are building an alcove in the kitchen with sides made of 18mm plywood. We'd like to add some shelves which are reasonably strong, enough to hold a microwave.

What supports would you recommend for the shelves please?

The supports need to be fitted from the inside, so we thought about studs in 5mm holes, like you find in kitchen cabinets. However would larger metal brackets screwed into the plywood sides be a better option?

the 5mm shelf supports are fine they will take a significant weight

bear in mind though that if you drill the holes freehand with a cordless drill the holes may not be very tight or even square to the surface -one way to get around that is to drill a hole in a block of wood, making sure that the hole is dead square, then use that as a guide to drill through -I have a pillar drill to do that sort of thing

one thing is that the standard shelf pins are pretty short, you can get long ones (through pins for mid shelves)

they might only be small 5mm pins but they take a huge weight

one other thing -the shelf pins dont stop the shelf being pulled forward -you can get over that by putting in a very small screw behind one of the dowels to stop the shelf being pulled out

I would use brackets, depending on quality of ply you could hit a small void with the holes.
