It seems that the shellac is acidic whereas the ammonia is alkali.
Interestingly Jeff recommends using butyl and propyl alcohol rather than methanol as a drying retarder as the latter evaporates too quickly
It seems that other than bank robbing, drug and bomb making it is also legitimately used to clean fish tanks and printer heads.
