Should lead-free be used?

I recently had a new boiler installed, and I noticed that the fitter used lead-free solder. Should he have used leaded solder instead?

I know that lead-free should be used on the water side, but not sure about the gas?

Lead free does the same job, it used to be more expensive so Leaded would be used where possible to save a few pence. Your Gas Installer would have done the required tests before and during commissioning of the Boiler, you really have nothing to worry about.

He did put something on the gas meter, to check for leaks.

Does that mean he checked all the pipe-work (new and old) for leaks when he commissioned the boiler?

Yes, he checked from the test nipple close too or at your gas meter. By doing that, the whole of your house gas piping would have been tested for soundness. It is also part of the annual boiler service/checks just as the CO alarm if fitted. If you do not have a CO alarm, then I strongly advise you to place one close to where your boiler is sited.

Yes, that's what he called it - the test nipple. he waited to see if the gas pressure dropped.

Yes, I have a CO alarm next to the boiler.

So all my pipework has been checked. that's good to know
