i have just finished tiling my shower cubicle and was wondering if anyone uses silicone sealant instead of grout in the shower,is this a good idea or not ?

You mean instead of grout all over..... as in not just the edges? As in inbetween all the tiles? As in no grout at all??????? If so, surely you jest? Why would you want to?
would'nt a top quality silicone last longer and look neater than grout?
Use a decent grout designed for use in showers like BAL superflex, it will be very difficult to get a neat finish on silicon without smears all over the tiles.
And if you tanked the shower area first
then waterproofing won't come into it.
