shower light/fan problem

Hi I am trying to help my neighbour, she had a shower area put in a few years back and they fitted one of those shower lights in the ceiling with a LV halogen and a fan in the flexible pipe behind, but the fan has packed up and there does not seem any way to get it out without breaking the whole ceiling. The lightfitting hole is about 100 to 110 mm ie hose size and I have puled the fitting down to have a look and I can just about feel the hose attached to a 100mm longish pipe but I cannot reach the fan.

So now I was thinking perhaps it is ok to leave the old fan in place as removing it would mean a lot more expensive damage with the ceiling and to fit a new fan in the hose a bit nearer to the light opening.

Would this be ok ie the air could go straight through the old one?

Also can you even get ones that will fit through the 100-110 mm hole as I have looked at a few on the net and although they seem the same size as the pipe in general so no problem at first look, I then notice they all seem to have some bulky lump on the side (with the eletronics for the timer etc) which would prevent me getting it through the hole.

So is there one that will fit through the hole, surely this would be a sensible design feature?

If there is one then would it be ok resting on the ceiling or would that cause noise or other problems?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi thanks for the reply yes you are right there is no access from above, it is in the area of the house that just has a very small pitched roof on it with no openings anywhere for access.

Am I right that you cannot get a fan that will fit through the 110mm hole?

Be very careful about breaching any insulation, or allowing warm moist air from the bathroom to get into an unheated roof space.
