I've a stone resin shower tray that'll be mounted on a few 2x2's . the instructions refere to using a 3/4' board - would a piece of chipboard be okay or is plywood the way to go? It seems the only ply I can get is 7' by 4'! I only need 800mm square.

My advice would be ply....shop around to see if you can buy a smaller sized piece...my local DIY shop (not a chain) supplies in more reasonable sizes.

Chipboard is not a good idea as a bit of damp turns it into something resembling soggy weetabix.

Some of the DIY 'sheds' sell cut sheets, but maybe not in the sizes you need, and their prices can be a bit steep. When I painted myself into a corner one weekend, I used 2 layers of 12mm WBP laid at right angles to each other, glued and screwed together at 3" centres.
