The shower tray has 4 upstands, I have channelled out the walls the fit it in snugly. In terms of plastering the area that has been channelled out - will good ol polyfilla do the trick?? - do I need to add any addtion waterproofing??. I will be tiling the wall

PLaster's not good, fine cement render is better. Polyfilla is absorbent so not ideal.
Whatever you use, if you paint it with 2/3 coats of pva solution (there's a waterproof grade which wickes sell) you should be OK.
Bythe way if you put waterproof pva IN plaster or cement it takes forever to set!
