Sizes for tap reviver kits

Is there any way of working out whether I need a 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch kit?
or is it a case of taking it apart and measuring the diameter of the part that screws into the main body?

1. Sink taps are almost invariably 1/2" BSP (generally equivalent to G1/2).
2. The size bears a strange relationship to the physical measurement. So little point in taking it apart.
