Yes, i know the answer is don't do it. Problem is it's already been done.

I think the skim has been on for around 3-4 years and appears to be reasonably well bonded to the paper/wall.

I'm in the process of refurbing the room and there will be various chases and holes that will need replastering.

Does anyone know if the additional dampness around the areas that are going to get replastered is going to cause any additional problems? I'm loath to hack off all the skim as it seems to be ok at the moment.

I skimmed a ladys living room, which was proper rough. Her husband ( ex ) had done it about 5 years before. Any way first trowel after my second coat, i noticed some bubbling ( like when you skim on wet bonding ) i popped it, and the a 8" square promptly fell off. He had skimmed over yellow wallpaper, and the moisture fom my work pulled it off. I waited 5 minutes and watched the whole wall bubble. So got my trowel and in 2 minutes i hacked off a huge wall, my two coats, the original skim, and the yellow wallpaper, fell off like melted butter. Showed the lady, and i done it again.

So if you can hack everything off, in case.

Thanks for the benefit of your experiences.

I'm reluctant to strip the whole lot off, but it its going to come off anyway....i'll have to bite the bullet and hack it off.

A bit more exploration required first to see if the whole room has been skimmed over the paper. Probably has, but yoiu never know.

Why dont you get a water spray bottle and give it a good spraying or a bucket of water and brush it on. It should soon be obvious if it is on a paper base...you will have to give it a good soakin' and see if the same happens as what happened to Hudds

Agree with Roy. Give it a good 5-10(rough guess) sprays and hopefully the skim stays on for you. If not then at least it will be easier to come off this way

Urgh this doesn't bode well. Had some work done in our house recently and found out the plaster plastered over the wallpaper in the living room. Yet another thing to get them to sort out.

It's not the plasterers job to strip the wallpaper off the wall unless he has quoted to do so.
This still doesn't give them an excuse for doing so, he/they should have discussed this with you prior to plastering

He shouldn't plaster over it though as you say . Not a tradesman.

Dunno how anyone can plaster over paper - it just balloons up. I only ever tried it once over paper that had been glossed - and it still ballooned up.

Sure you weren't plastering a Zeppelinn Joe

That gives me and idea - plaster over a balloon and when it's set - pop it. Then make a little hole and pull the balloon out. Novelty eh?
