Skirting Boards - Yes or No?

Im doing up a house i bought, i like clean and contemporary. most will be white (not everyones taste i know).

Are skirting boards still fashionable? Do they stop the appearance of space and smoothness. Should i even put them in?
If yes, i was looking at just chamfered ones. i dont want anything fancy, i dont want to draw the eye to them.

Opinions welcome.

You obviously never get involved with vacuum cleaning the floor or have young children. If you did you'd know that skirtings are not a fashion "accessory" but an essential means of preventing damage to the plaster walls by the vacuum cleaner,by children's toys, by carpet fitters, etc, etc

Bottom line, yes they are essential

Most plasterers don't finish right to the floor so they are essential to cover that up.

It's the new thing in new build houses to fit quite tall square edge, with a very slight chamfer on the edge.

If you wanted a crisp clean look, maybe you could try a 130x18 timber as skirting.

Plain chamfered oak is popular in new builds.
Collects little dust and easy cleaned.

I wish I'd seen that before I did all the skirting boards in my house with 7" ogee.
