Sky Boxes - do you think that they waste power?

It would be interesting to take the same measurements for the new Sky Q Silver box. More features but newer tech should mean the consumption is similar or lower.

Had to test, unscrew the shot gun aerial wire and power drops to 11W steady. Re-fitted and starts to flash between 11 and 14 watt again. So it would seem stand-by is really 11W for the box which well exceeds the one watt industry standard for stand-by. As to what in the box takes that power one can only guess. Remember unlike your Freeview, FreetoAir, or Freesat standard box this box can down load films and programs from the fibre optic broad band that came with the package. So maybe we should compare with out PC rather than TV box.

To my mind the new Q lacks most of the features I use. No RF in or out so can't connect to other TV's in the house. Not SCART socket, no RCA output. So for me at least it would mean ripping out all I have and starting again from scratch. We can already watch Sky on the PC and Tablet so can't really see what it does?

The house looks great, however stairs with no rail to stop babies crawling though them and falling is not really safe or practical. So I would assume the box is the same. Do like the idea of pressing a button on the box to find the remote.

After doing all my tests I went to remove the energy meter, I had failed to zero before fitting so leaving on was no point. Then noted power, it has dropped to 9W. So 2:30pm today I have zeroed all readings. The power does change 9 to 11 to 13 to 16 watt as to what it is doing not a clue.

Today Sunday 3rd removed Energy meter and read the stored data. Average power used 15.774 watts. Box is never set to stand-by.
Energy meter batteries store kWh, Max A, Max W, total time powered up. Clock stops once unplugged but info retained. It shows live V, A, W, PF, Hz plus all the shows time including day of week. All I am sure interesting but in real terms using it has made very little difference to how we use equipment. If anything we leave things on more.
