Slate floor tiles problem

HI, I have slate floor tiles in a kitchen they are a dark grey/black colour. Im having problems cleaning them, they look very patchy and dull with what appear to be greasy patches.Im wondering if the previous owner didnt seal them. Should I remove and relay something else or try to do something with them?
