We have a set of farm gates set between 2 pillars with a 7" x 2" beam above. The gates are secured with a padlock and now that it's dark it's a fiddle to hold your phone torch in one hand whilst entering the combination. The bright idea was to put a slim cabinet light on the underside of the beam but they don't appear to exist for outdoor use, or do they?
I don't want a full blown floodlight that stays on for ages, just something that casts a subtle light for 30 seconds...

Brick light with PIR?
My initial thought was 'good shout' but a brick light would be too big and difficult to fit in the right place. On the inside of the cross beam we have a u-shaped aluminium channel which we hang screens on for a bit of privacy so no fixing point. If we attached to the outside - the gate is 4ft from the road, a well used pedestrian walkway so the PIR would be triggered day and night.

A slim cabinet light fixed underneath the beam would be discreet and only trigger when close enough to sort the padlock. In theory anyway....

I have a similar problem, in total darkness, entering the correct numbers, for my two workshop/garage doors. I have one of these, adjacent to each door, and a few on the pathway. They work fine, for the purpose, and even in the winter, the solar is enough...

That's got me thinking if something similar could be attached to the brick pillar behind the wooden beam so hidden from passers by and away from the U-channel with the light angled to cast a beam from the side?

I have a small round usb Rechargable light.
It is in a porch and can come on when it senses movement.
I am guessing it’s ok for outside, will try to find a link.

EDIT. Mine is nearly a year old and has only been charged once.

It has sat on the wall of a porch although it says it is a ceiling light.
It says it can be used in a shower.
I’d give it a go outside if you can protect it - or look for a waterproof alternative.
It was only £12

Modern PIR lights, are incredibly frugal on PIR power use. I've had one of the spare, solar powered, PIR lights, stashed in the dark, in my garage for months, but still coming on every time I go in, until this week. Today, I actually decided where to put it, and installed it.
