The cistern in my loft is a round 50 gallon thing, if I turn on one of the cistern fed sink taps it empties faster than the incoming water main can fill it up!

I've got good pressure from the mains fed cold kitchen sink tap. AFAIK the original ball valve is in the cistern so its about 20 years old, I haven't done any further investigation yet but is this likely to be lime scaled up?

Sorry its a stupid question

Why do need 50 gallons?

I take it your not on a water meter

In my last house I had the same problem and when I took the ballcock off there was a stone and a load of krud in the venturi.

Turn off your cold water stop tap and go and take it off and have a look.
Dont worry if you get it wrong 50 gallons wont bring down too many ceilings and will dry up in a week or so

What I meant was
if it didn't fill up slower than it emptied, you'd only need a 1 gallon tank.

The 50 gal tank was there when I moved in!

I get your point about the fill up but I suppose I assumed this condition would only happen when you had say the hot and cold taps running to the bath not when only a single basin tap was running!
