I have a sony vaio pc which has alwys worked well. Recently it has started to run incredibly slowly. I have deleted all unnecessary files but don't know what to do next. I have had firewall and anti virus software on the system but could it be infected?. My son uses the pc and a friend of his says he got an e mail from him containing a trojan. We did not sent this

Invariably, slow running is a software problem, not hardware.
Since you already know that the PC is virus infected, you need to remove all malware.
1. Disconnect the machine from all networks that its attached to.
2. Run msconfig, disable all startup items, then reboot.
3. Run a scan using your antivirus software.
4. Install and scan with Spybot Search and Destroy (downloaded on another machine if necessary). Allow it to scan again on reboot if that's what it recommends.
This might not get everything on the first pass, so scan again if necessary, and come back here if you need more help.
