I have a small lintel with a slight "M" profile, meaning about 100mm wide x 100mm high x 90mm wide.

There is a single reinforcing bar about 8 mm exactly in the centre.

When used over a small window 500mm wide can it be used either way up?

The widest profile, 100 mm, is quite rough whereas the other sides are very smooth from the mould.

Over a small window, which way round would it usually be fitted?

In theory the rough edge goes at the top, because being a composite lintel the 3 courses of brickwork will bond to it bettter.
In practice most people put it which ever way suits them. Smooth at the bottom if it shows, rough at the bottom for a key for render/plaster.
