Small stairs guard rail

Hi,

I'm changing the layout of a bathroom. The new layout means that the small stairs will extend into the bathroom. Does anyone know the regulation on having the stairs gaurded to prevent someone falling down them.

I'd prefer not to have a thick wall, maybe a metal guard rail but can't find the correct building regs on this.

and a gap no greater than 99mm in the stairs and banister
