I have a W reg Smart Diesel and having problems selecting forward gears. Symptoms are:
1. On trying to select 1st gear the car very slightly rocks back and fore.
2. There is a noise from the gearbox which sounds like a solenoid of sorts trying to engage.
3. If the car is on an incline, 1st gear will select ok as it rolls downhill.
4. There is no problem selecting reverse gear.
As I am unable to find any Haynes manuals for the Smart car, I would aqppreciate any ideas before I take it to a Smart specialist which is over 50 miles from home.
