Just wondering if it would be worth installing smart (Hive) TRVs to radiators on my heating system. We have a worcester 24cdi boiler with no room thermostat (we turn it on and off as an when we need the heating), but it does seem to go off at times, guess there is a thermostat inside the Boiler?

We will be replacing the boiler over time and installing a room thermostat at that point. I can install the TRVs myself now and can re-use with new system.

Would the TRVs result in any savings? And also can a smart room thermostat be installed to this boiler?

If you want saving, fit a thermostat today. We are not living in the 1950s.

Comfort and economy.

Even the cheapest will help

Yes, but only significantly if you presently find that your home is warmer than you want it to be, and by fitting TRV's you plan to reduce the temperature inside the house and therefore as a result will burn less fuel.

Unfortunately most TRV's don't include a 'boiler interlock' that switches the boiler off completely when your house is warm. Hive TRV's can do this (see Hive Active Heating) but you would need to wire a control box to the boiler in the same way a room thermostat is connected to achieve this, otherwise all they will do it turn the radiators down as the rooms warm up, but the boiler will still continue to chug away burning fuel unnecessarily. In this case, you would also need to have either one radiator without a TRV fitted, or have a 'by-pass' installed so that the water will still have somewhere to flow when the TRV's are shutting down.

A Room Thermostat will switch off the boiler completely and since 2006, Part L of the building regulations (conservation of fuel and power) have required all new boiler installations have a boiler interlock, that switches it off.

can a smart room thermostat be installed to this boiler?
Yes.
