My smeg oven has just died. I turned all the fuses off beforehand to rewire a plug socket after plastering, then after having turned the fuses back on the oven is now dead. Fairly certain the oven didn't trip the fuse, could the fuse have died from simply turning it off and on?

Also it's a smeg SE380X - the fuse box remains on so nothing is tripping. The CCU seems to be working fine - well - the lights on!?

stuck on auto

Do you mean stuck on an auto programme? It doesn’t have a display or timing unit, just the oven functions (grill, fan assisted ect) and the thermostat plus an inbuilt mechanical timer (like an egg timer) that doesn't have any effect on the oven – ie doesn’t turn it off or anything. There’s no digital display.

installed a new oven the other day, similar set up to yours..
It wouldn't work.. then I read the instructions and the timer has to be on for the oven to work.. you could turn the timer all the way round to "manual" and it stayed on..

but you say that yours is just th minute minder model and not the cooking timer model so that can't be it..

odds are that you didn't connect the socket back up right and that you've broken the radial..

where was this socket you had to remove for plastering?

we will need...

a photo of the front of the oven, a photo of the connections in the socket you refitted, a photo of the fuse board ( large and clear please ).

The socket still works, would that indicate it's ok?

In the bedroom - it is next to the kitchen though

Will do - unfort haven't unpacked yet and can't find my download cable but will post pics tomorrow morning.

Here's the model for sale else where though

if the socket works, that just means that the wire INTO the socket is ok.. it doesn't mean that the wire OUT of the socket is connected right..

Fuse Box

Oven front (all the markings have worn off.)

The CCU - lovingly positioned behind the dishwasher for all our emergency needs - the light is on and it switches on and off fine.

The plug socket that was unwired and then rewired prior to the oven dying. There is some oddness here as there are three neutrals but only two live wires.
The reason the plug had the faceplate removed was we got the builder who did the plastering back round to have a look and see if he could remember seeing another live. He says hadn't seen any other live wires leading to the this socket and thinks the extra neutral is to do with the other sockets in the bedroom (there are two more sockets in the room- looks like a bit of a bodgey spur extension.) Currently all three neutrals are wired in – as the builder said it was when he removed the socket – and was when he removed it the second time.
It’s a bit of a mess so we’re going to have to get a sparky in to take a look - but irrespective of that, the oven worked prior to the plastering work and after the work was completed when the plug was wired back up for the first time. It seems odd that it should affect the oven after just having the faceplate off and on again for the second time for the builder to have a look.

That looks like an FCU (Fused connection unit) with a wire seeming to go to the metalclad double socket outlet with the oven plugged into that.

Does the FCU feed the double socket, if so does the socket work with something else plugged in.
Just because the light is on on the FCU does not mean that it is wired up correctly or that wires have not been pulled out. (I have seen some FCU's with neons wired up so the neon lights even when no fuse is present)

Yes you’re right - it is a FCU. It does feed the double socket - but that's only got the dishwasher plugged into it which works fine. So the thick cable coming out the bottom must be for the oven and just at the top of the FCU between it and the copper pipe you can see a tiny bit of black cable coming out - which is for the hob ignition which also works currently.

Turning the timer didn't work unfortunately - being an old oven it's an independent unit - just like an old school egg timer! Thanks for your help all and shout if you have any other ideas or need any more pics.
