So the smell comes from the bathroom basin, bath and downstairs in the kitchen sink?

Maybe the trap water is being syphoned as you say maybe when the toilet if flushed?

What is you're soil stack setup like, do they all terminate directly into the soil stack or does the bath/basin terminate into hoppers?

How long has it been like this?

Shine a torch down the plug hole, can you see water?

sink and bath terminate into a hooper (the same hooper) . toilet watse going into soil stack.

there is water in the traps as i have shone a torch down to see the water in there.

Check the overflows before you start dismantling anything. Grot and corruption builds up inside them - especially in summer. Ours often smell like a dead badger. Caustic soda for the trap and a squirt of toilet duck for the overflow usually sorts them out.
