Hi,
I have a 3 bedroom house which was built in the late 80's. There is one smoke alarm on the landing ceiling. I know the smoke alarm is connected to the light circuit as whenever I trip the lights the alarm beeps. I assume it has a battery backup as the beeps sound like the battery is running out or something the longer I have the lights off.

Would this be a suitable replacement? http://www.screwfix.com/prods/84956...on-Photoelectric-Alarm-with-9V-Battery-Backup

or should I just replace it with a standard battery one?

As it is obviously connected to the mains supply, when this is turned off, for any reason, the detector is telling you that there is a problem with the supply.

It's meant to do that, it's a safety thing, power off, beep, beep etc, power back on, silence.

(Unless there is smoke) then BEEP BEEP BEEP etc

The 'standard battery one' will do exactly the same thing when the pattery needs replacing.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I would like to replace the alarm as its discoloured and we are re-painting the ceiling.
If I just need a mains one I'll look in B&Q later today. My local Homebase didn't have any & the one in SF is relatively expensive.

the one in SF is relatively expensive.

£21.33 is not expensive compared to the lives it may save

What I was trying to work out was why SF was more expensive than other places like B&Q. I believe its because they are selling a Photoelectric alarm whereas B&Q sell an Ionisation one http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/n...h=mians+smoke+alarm&selected=products&x=0&y=0

I have found a dual (photoelectric / ionisation) battery version, but haven't seen a dual mains powered one.
