Smoking element on Bosch oven

Do you think this could be a thermostat issue which from what I’m seeing is actually what they call an oven temperature PTC sensor ?

No, it suggests exactly what I said - some debris got itself onto the element, and was burning off when the element was switched on. Just open a window, and let it burn off

I have a multi element oven - ring with fan or top element doubles up as a grill or bottom element under the metalwork. I nearly always use the ring with fan but if I am doing a low and slow in tinfoil then no point in using the fan so I use the top and bottom element setting and it always fills the kitchen with smoke until it has burnt off all the bits of fat spit from using the ring element.

A bit more info
I’ve just done a resistance test on the PTC sensor
At room temperature the reading was 533 on a setting of 2000 ohms but then if I held the sensor and breathed on it, it actually went up to 546

However, I’m close inspection if you look on my photo it actually looks like the white almost chalky type wick is actually split in two places

Considering that my cooker when you use the grill, which is what we was doing, which uses the top element you have three options temperature 1, 2 or 3, but that is simply done by turning a knob so would the temperature sensor be involved or does it regulate the heat some other way?

Yes I would think that is part of the temperature control circuit and as it looks physically damaged I would replace it. But not sure how it would cause a problem with the LCD. Or is what you are describing normal operation of the LCD.

So quick update

I replaced the thermostat and there was a little smoke again from the top elements so I think I jumped the gun and it was likely fat deposits first time around although there did seem a lot
It’s been fine ever since so as I say, I think I was too quick to assume there was a problem with the top element so panic over

However, one other thing that I’ve noticed is I have two manual thermometers that while testing the oven I put on the middle shelf

What I noticed is when I set the temperature dial to 200°C , the little red box with the red thermometer illuminates indicating that the cooker is getting up to temperature however I noticed that the thermometer extinguishes around 150°C indicating it is ready

Obviously, this is a fair difference from the desired heat
It does get completely up to temperature eventually, but it’s made me think and would like some input on. Is there any possibility that the actual temperature selection switch could be faulty that causes that or is it normal for them to be lower?

Hope that makes sense

Most likely, it will be thermal lag - it takes some time for the entire oven to get to an even temperature, that's why recipes mention 'pre-heat the oven'.

Food accumulates on elements while the oven is used when you then use the grill it will smoke while it burns off any food residue is that simple.

Sounds like your oven might have a self cleaning cycle. Next time it does it, run that before taking it apart

Re your complaint that the compartment doesn't reach temperature (quickly?) have you tried setting different programs and seeing if it heats? Ours is a Siemens, very similar to yours (grill has small and large areas, 1/2/3 for temp, that seemingly makes no diff :) )

One day it wasnt heating up in regular fan heat mode but would in bottom and grill modes. One element out of the 3 it has, was knackered
